STUDENT ABSENCES AND EXCUSES

The following rules, regulations and procedures shall apply to student attendance in the Farmington R-7 School District.

1.         Attendance is the responsibility of the student and the parent. Parents or legal guardians can excuse up to six (6) days of absence per semester. Any absence excused by a doctor is not included in these six (6) days.

2.         Absences will be classified as "excused" or "unexcused." Excused absences allow pupils to make up assignments and tests as long as the make-up policy is followed. Unexcused absences result in zeros for all classwork and tests. Unexcused absences include, but are not limited, to the following:

            a.         Any absence when parent verification has not been received

            b.         Truancy

            c.         Out-of-school suspension (OSS), and

            d.         Absence (after six [6] days) not covered by a doctor's note.

3.         Students are eligible to make up all classwork as long as the absence is excused, and the student complies with the make-up policy.

4.         Certain absences are excused regardless of the number of absences:

            a.         Hospitalization,

            b.         Doctor's excuses,

            c.         Death of a family member,

            d.         School-sponsored activities for which the pupil has been properly pre-excused,

            e.         Absences due to a school bus's failure to make its regular run,

            f.         Nurse's excuses,

            g.         Required religious observance, and

            h.         Visits with a parent or legal guardian who is an active duty member of the military who has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or is immediately returned from deployment to a combat zone or combat support posting, with permission of the superintendent or designee.

5.         A family vacation during the school year will require advanced assignments, completion of those assignments during the vacation time, and the turning in of those assignments upon the pupil's first day in attendance after the vacation. At least three (3) days’ notice must be received by the administration prior to the vacation so that teachers can be notified and assignments can be prepared. It should be understood that days taken for family vacations count as part of the six (6) absences per semester. When the vacation exceeds the six (6) allowed absences, the remaining days are excused only if the prearranged provisions have been met.

6.         A+ Attendance Requirement: The ninety-five percent (95%) requirement for a student to be eligible to receive financial assistance under the A+ Schools Project is interpreted to be that a student must be in attendance ninety-five percent (95%) of the total cumulative attendance hours possible. No provision or waiver exists which alters the 95% requirement. A student on homebound instruction (approved by the state) is considered to be in attendance.

7.         Parents or guardians of a pupil who is absent from any one (1) class six (6) times in a semester will receive a letter notifying them of these absences. Students with excessive absences may be contacted more frequently to help improve attendance.

8.         Parents/Guardians of elementary students may appeal in writing to the Director of Elementary Education. Parents/Guardians of secondary students may appeal in writing to the respective principal. Following that procedure, if there is still disagreement, appeal may be made to the superintendent and ultimately to the Board of Education.

If a student in foster care is absent from school due to a decision by a court or child-placing agency to change the student's placement or due to a verified court appearance or related court-ordered activity, the grades and credit of the student will be calculated as of the date the student left school, and no lowering of the student's grades shall occur as a result of the absence under these circumstances.
