Citizenship
To be eligible to participate in district athletics is a privilege granted if students meet the eligibility
standards as set forth by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA), and the
Salem R-80 Board of Education. According to the MSHSAA eligibility standards, athletes must be
good citizens in their school and community. Athletes’ satisfactory conduct shall be in accordance
with the standards of good discipline, as defined in Board regulation JG-R. It is understood that
citizenship eligibility cases are handled on an individual basis at the school level by the coach,
athletic director and building principal.
Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse
Any athlete being in possession of, having used, attempting to use, under the influence of, or giving
or selling to others any controlled substance, or alcohol, is in violation of this athletic policy.
Penalties for a violation are as follows:
First Offense: Suspension, from 20 percent of contests at level of competition, to be carried
over to the next sport season if needed. Counseling session on the related
problem.
Second Offense: Suspension, from 30 percent of contests at level of competition, to be carried
over to the next sport season if needed. Professional counseling with
possibility of dependency evaluation.
Third Offense: Suspension, from participation, for 365 calendar days. Subject to an
alcohol/drug dependency program re-evaluation after six (6) months.
Tobacco
Possession or use of tobacco, in any form, is not acceptable.
First Offense: Minimum punishment is extra conditioning as a reminder that the use of
tobacco is unhealthy for the body. The coach of the sport will provide the
conditioning program. Counseling by the staff on the harms and effects of
tobacco is required.
Second Offense: Suspension, from 20 percent of contests at level of competition, to be carried
over to the next sport season if needed.
Third Offense: Suspension, from 30 percent of contests at level of competition, to be carried
over to the next sport season if needed.
Fourth Offense: Suspension, from participation, for 365 calendar days.
Unsportsmanlike Acts
Any athlete who expresses oneself in a malicious or violent nature during a contest resulting in
ejection. Penalties for this type of violation are:
First Offense: One (1) game suspension at the same level.
Second Offense: Two (2) game suspension at the same level.
Third Offense: Suspension, from participation, for 365 calendar days.
Notification
If suspension of an athlete is imminent, the following people shall be notified:
1. Athlete
2. Parent or legal guardian
3. Building Principal
4. Superintendent of Schools
5. Athletic Director
6. All involved coaches
Comments
1. The Salem R-80 In Season Athletic Policy is in force from the first day of practice until the
end of the season.
2. Athletes completing in one (1) sport, and planning to participate in a sport season
immediately following, are considered to be participants in the upcoming season even during
the transition period.
3. Coaches have the option of instituting stricter standards.
4. This policy works in conjunction with the Random Student Drug Testing policy for the
Salem R-80 extracurricular students.
